SAN ANTONIO – Texas – The HBU women's basketball team scored the game's final seven points over the final 1:16 to end a nine-game skid, defeating the UIW Cardinals 60-55 in Southland Conference basketball on Wednesday evening inside the McDermott Center.

The Huskies' (5-13, 1-8 SLC) led 53-47 with 5:46 remaining in the game but UIW (8-10, 4-5 SLC) rallied for an 8-0 run over the next three minutes and 30 seconds for a 55-53 lead. Junior guard Megan Valdez-Crader tied the game at 55-55 on a jumper in the paint with 1:16 left on the clock. A blocked shot by sophomore Marilyn Nzoiwu on the Cardinals' next possession gave the Huskies the ball back and set up freshman forward N'Denasija Collins to drain a three-pointer with 23 seconds left to go ahead 58-55. Shannon Jones came away with a steal on the next possession before Collins was fouled with 12 seconds to go, making both free throws to ice the game and give the Huskies the 60-55 victory.

HBU's Timia Jefferson scored 18 points with six rebounds to extend her double figures scoring streak to three. Collins finished with 13 points, five of which came late in the fourth quarter, and recorded six rebounds. Nzoiwu registered her first career double-double scoring 10 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds.

The Cardinals' guard Victoria Jackson scored 13 points and had two rebounds while Lunden Henry scored 13 as well and reined in three rebounds.

The Huskies return home to face the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Saturday at 2 p.m. in Sharp Gym.
