NACOGDOCHES, Texas – HBU put more shots on target, forcing SFA into a number of tough saves, but was unable to find the net as the Huskies fell in a hard-fought 1-0 Southland Conference women's soccer matchup on Sunday afternoon at the SFA Soccer Field.
The Huskies (1-9-0, 0-3-0 SLC) nearly took an early lead when
Whitney Johnson took aim from 10 yards outside the 18-yard box but SFA (4-6-0, 1-2-0 SLC) goalkeeper Madeline Talbot made a full-extension diving save to keep it out of the net in the 14
th minute. In the 27
th minute,
Talin Rizo put an attempt just inside the right post but Talbot was there to clear the ball out with a diving stop.
Ryan Ford also had a pair of shots on goal late in the first half but both were saved while the Huskies kept SFA from putting any of its five attempts on target.
In the second half, the Ladyjacks got the first attempt on goal but Caylon McMillan's shot from well outside the box was easily scooped up by HBU keeper
Ashtyn Franks at the 54:01 mark. Franks then made her second save of the match less than six minutes later to keep things scoreless. HBU again just missed out on taking the lead in the 73
rd minute when
Catalina Elwonger curled a shot past the SFA keeper but it bounced off the left post. The lone goal of the match came at the 83:21 mark after the Ladyjacks earned a corner kick with Sophia Fondren's kick past the far post finding Peyton Graves whose header snuck past Franks to put SFA up 1-0.
For the match, SFA held an 18-12 advantage in shot attempts while the Huskies had five shots on goal to the Ladyjacks' three. Franks finished the day with two saves.
The Huskies will return home to Sorrels Field on Friday, Oct. 4, for their next match when they host Southeastern Louisiana at 7:00 p.m. Nicholls will then come to town for a 1:00 p.m. kick-off on Sunday, Oct. 6.
