HOUSTON - The HBU football program enters its final days of practice before game preparation for UTEP ramps up. The Husky Sports Network caught up with head coach
Vic Shealy for the latest from the Huskies' fall camp.
PRACTICE PLAN
HBU held its final full scrimmage last Saturday night under the lights at Husky Stadium. The Huskies spent much of Tuesday's practice and will continue to work on situational aspects of the game, such as red zone, goal line, third down offense and defense and problems that are unique to those field positions in Wednesday's workout. Coach Shealy said the Huskies had a really good two-minute drill session and also mentioned how the team has been working a lot on "neutral downs" -- situations that could be 50/50 between run and pass options. HBU will shift fully into game week mode on Thursday.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
"We are going to be focusing on development and continue to work on fundamentals through Wednesday, especially with a lot of these young guys. We have a few days to work on those techniques before completely turning our attention into game preparation for UTEP."
OFFENSIVE STANDOUTS
Bailey Zappe - Junior - Quarterback - Victoria, Texas
"Bailey has had a tremendous fall camp and he has been really sharp in his decision-making. His work ethic and leadership qualities off the field have been unquestioned. During the summer, when there is a ball in hand, coaches are not allowed to be around, so those workouts have to be player-led and the quarterback has to drive that. Bailey has started to look like that coach on the field and taken on that role of a guy who has played as many snaps as he has."
Jerreth Sterns - Sophomore - Wide Receiver - Waxahachie, Texas
"
Jerreth Sterns continues to get better, proving that last year was not simply a product of having the opportunities. He has created a lot of success on his own and I'm proud of him for just how hard-working and consistent he is."
OFFENSIVE BREAKOUT
Dan Wilkins - Junior - Offensive Line - Brisbane, Australia
"He is a physical guy and a good run blocker. He's in that trio of guys that we brought in as mid-year transfers and rom spring ball he's really been impressive. He should start for us at left guard, we trust him at that position and he's been great for our team chemistry."
DEFENSIVE STANDOUT
Andre Walker - Senior - Defensive End - Slidell, Louisiana
"
Andre Walker has a great ability to explode off the edge and had a few sacks in the scrimmage Saturday. We expect Andre to be out there causing trouble for the offense."
DEFENSIVE BREAKOUTS
Philip Ossai - Freshman - Linebacker - Conroe, Texas
"We've been impressed with how physical and mentally sharp
Philip Ossai is.
Brennan Young came in from Spring Oak Ridge and made a significant impact for us as a freshman and we see a lot of the same skills in Philip. They really know how to develop linebackers at Oak Ridge, as they both have a tremendous football IQ."
Tra Fluellen - Freshman - Safety - Gilmer, Texas
"The game has really slowed down for him. Freshmen come in and are heavily-tasked with everything now on their plates, but he acts just like a veteran safety out there."
