Junior first baseman Johnny Gonzales hits fourth homer of season

SAN MARCOS, Texas - HBU got off to a hot start with four runs in the first innings, but Texas State answered with four of its own, then later broke the game open with a five-run sixth for a 17-8 victory in non-conference baseball Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark.

Junior rightfielder Brandon Bena extended his hitting streak to 16 games and recorded his sixth-straight multiple-hit game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run for the Huskies (12-24). Junior first baseman Johnny Gonzales went 2-for-5 with a home run, his fourth of the season, driving in a run and scoring one, while junior centerfielder Chase Talbot went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair. Senior catcher Erik Voller scored twice and drove in a run and junior designated hitter Matt Solomon drove in two.

Senior lefthander Taylor Franzman (0-3) took the loss for HBU, working two innings in relief.

Jaxon Williams went 5-for-5 and scored four times, while Will Hollis went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, four RBIs and four runs for the Bobcats (24-13). John Wuthrich went 4-for-6 with a double, a home run, four RBIs and scored twice and Jaylen Hubbard went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs. Dalton Shuffield and Skyler Valentine each drove in a pair and Peyton Lewis scored twice.

Garrett Hermann (4-1) picked up the win, despite allowing the four first-inning runs, working four innings.

The Huskies return to Southland Conference play when they face Incarnate Word Thursday through Saturday in San Antonio. The first two games begin at 6:30 p.m., with Saturday's finale set for 2 p.m. All three games can be heard on the Husky Sports Network with Russ Reneau and are available on HBUHuskies.com.
