FRISCO, Texas – After earning a pair of Field Athlete of the Week selections during the indoor season, freshman
Christopher Welch has earned his first outdoor nod after recording the longest triple jump in the Southland Conference this season at the Houston Alumni Invitational this past Saturday. The weekly honor was announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon and is voted on by the league's Sports Information Directors.
Welch won the triple jump at the Houston Alumni Invitational with a jump of 15.73m/51-7.25 on his first attempt, winning the event by more than a foot and a half. That mark is the best in the conference so far this season and ranks seventh in the West region. It is the second-best distance by a freshman and the 13
th-best in the NCAA so far in 2019.
The Huskies travel to Natchitoches, La. this Friday, Apr. 12, for the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational at the Walter P. Ledet Track Complex, the host site for this year Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
