GULF SHORES, Ala. - The HBU beach volleyball team slipped past Spring Hill, 3-2, then were edged by Tulane, 3-2, on its first day at the March to May Saturday.
Against Spring Hill, the Huskies' top pair of senior
Bailey Banks and junior
Tori Hinojosa defeated Payton Gidney and Kassandra Fairly, 21-17, 21-15, while freshmen
Natalie Bennett and
Maddie Butters fell to Brittani Billotti and Taylor Hurst at two, 21-17, 21-15. Freshmen
Kylie Bryan and
Lauren Huggins won at three over Caroline Herrera and Allison Wiemer, 21-15, 21-19, while Sarah Senft and Emily Greim downed freshmen
Conley Harris and Lindsey Harris, 21-18, 21-17. Junior
Danielle Wheeler and sophomore
Meagan Carter were the only pair to win both their matches on the day, taking the five spot over Emma Rose Neibert and Emily Sullivan 21-18, 21-17.
Wheeler and Carter opened with a win at five over Tulane's Morgan Esters and Kilani Daane, 13-21, 25-23, 15-11, but
Conley Harris and Huggins were clipped at the four spot by Haley Gibson and Ellie Letko, 19-21, 21-16, 15-7. Bryan and Lindsey Harris fell at three to Rio Frohoff and Lauren Orlich, 21-16, 21-15, but Bennett and Butters knotted up the match by pulling out a 21-19, 12-21, 15-11 win at two over Tarin Mergener and Addie Hermstad. At the top spot, Banks and Hinojosa fell to Kaylie McHugh and Eva Torruella, 21-9, 21-10.
The Huskies face No. 18 Georgia State at 10:30 a.m. and host UAB at 1:30 p.m. Sunday to wrap up the tournament.
