BSB: Tulane Takes Opener Over HBU, 6-2

Junior RF Brandon Bena doubled, scored for Huskies

NEW ORLEANS - Tulane broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run bottom of the third and went on to claim a 6-2 victory over HBU in the non-conference baseball series opener Friday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

Junior rightfielder Brandon Bena doubled and scored for the Huskies (5-16), while senior shortstop Derek Reilly and junior centerfielder Chase Talbot each drove in runs. Junior third baseman Trent Franson extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single, junior outfielder Ryne Edmondson delivered a pinch-hit single, while senior catcher Erik Voller and junior second baseman Nathan Soriano also had base hits.

Senior righthander Zach Carter (1-4) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits with a strikeout and three walks in seven innings. Senior righthander Daniel Endsley pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.

Kody Hoese went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, drove in two and scored twice, while Frankie Niemann doubled and drove in a pair for the Green Wave (15-7). Hudson Haskin singled and scored twice.

Kaleb Roper (3-2) earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits with 12 strikeouts and no walks in 7.2 innings. Connor Pellerin came on and recorded the final four outs, three via the strikeout.

Bena doubled two lead off the second, then Franson followed with a single to left. Reilly gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead by laying down a squeeze bunt.

Haskin reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the second, then Kobi Owen and Jonathon Artigues drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Collin Burns' sacrifice fly tied the game, 1-1.

Hoese popped up to shallow center in the third, but the ball was lost in the twilight sky and he wound up with a leadoff double. Grant Mathews followed with a popup to third that was also lost for a single, then Haskin walked to load the bases. Niemann came through with a two-run double to center and Haskin scored on a wild pitch to give the Green Wave a 4-1 lead.

Hoese blasted a two-run homer to left center in the seventh, his 11th of the year, to extend Tulane's lead to 6-1.

Soriano and Edmondson had back-to-back singles in the eighth, then Talbot plated a run with an RBI groundout.

The series continues with a 2 p.m. first pitch Saturday, followed by a 1 p.m. start in Sunday's finale.
