BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- HBU softball started the Samford Tournament hot going 2-0 today with a 5-3 win over Jackson State and a 6-2 win over Samford. The Huskies have gotten their win percentage over .500 with the two wins today with two games left in the Samford Tournament, and are only two wins away from their win total from last season.
Game One: The Huskies had a total of 12 hits in the game lead by
Caitlyn Brockway and
Amber Lotz who each collected 3 hits. Brockway went 3-4 with 2 RBI's and scored once while Lotz reached base safely four times going 3-3 with a walk and a run scored. Senior
Brooke Bushman added a 2-4 performance at the plate scoring once.
Heidi Jaquez and
Autumn Sydlik both doubled in the win.
Emma Guindon (3-0) got the win in the circle for the Huskies going 6.2 innings giving up 3 runs all unearned on 3 hits and six walks with 8 strikeouts. Elliot Estes recorded the save by coming in for the final out stranding all three inherited runners.
The Huskies got thing started in the top of the 4th when freshman
Caitlyn Brockway singled to left to lead off the inning and eventually coming around to score after a SAC bunt by
Demi Janak, a single by
Brooke Bushman, and transfer
Riley Bullen's RBI single through the right side.
Jacquelyne Garcia hit a sacfly to bring Bushman in to push the lead to 2-0. HBU continued the scoring in the 5th when Brockway singled up the middle to score
Sierra Humphrey. In the 6th inning the Huskies pushed across two more after a RBI double by
Heidi Jaquez and another RBI single by Brockway. Jackson State was subdued for most of the day by freshman
Emma Guindon who didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning. Jackson State ended up scoring one in the 6th and two in the 7th before Elliot Estes came in to get the final out.
Game two: HBU was lead once again by
Caitlyn Brockway who had another 3-4 game driving in 3 RBI's scoring twice including once on her solo shot in the 4th inning.
Brooke Bushman followed her up by reaching base safely all four plate appearances going 2-2 with 2 doubles, a RBI, a run scored, and 2 walks.
Heidi Jaquez also drove in a run on a infield single, while Demi janak added a double going 1-3 with a HBP.
Jessica Patak (2-5) pitched 5 innings in the circle to earn the win giving up two runs on four hits, and four walks with six strikeouts. Elliot Estes came in the 6th inning and closed out the game with 2 innings pitched giving up one hit and striking out one.
The Bulldogs of Samford got off to an early lead scoring two runs in the first inning, but that would be all they would get as Patak would shut them down the following 4 innings before Elliot Estes would come in and get her second save of the day pitching 2 clean innings. In between that the Huskies offense collected six runs on eight hits with four of them going for extra bases.
