HOUSTON – After four straight matches on the road the HBU women's soccer team returns to Sorrels Field on Friday evening to host North Texas at 6:00 p.m. before again hitting the road to face the Texas Longhorns in Austin on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
The Huskies (2-3-0) split a pair of games on the road last weekend, first picking up a 3-0 shutout win at Prairie View A&M before dropping a 2-1 decision at SMU. A trio of HBU players scored in the win over Prairie View with
Gabby Rodriguez scoring her first goal of the season,
Sabriah Spencer her second, and
Avery Cortez her team-leading third. At SMU, sophomore
Jessica Nevils scored the first goal of her HBU career.
As a team, HBU has been among the most accurate in the country with a shots on goal percentage of .659, the sixth-highest percentage nationally. Goalkeeper
Alanis Guevara is second in the league with 5.6 saves per game, a mark that places her in the top-50 nationally in the category.
North Texas (4-1-1) comes into Friday's match out-scoring opponents 13-3 for the season. The Mean Green boasts four players tied for the team-lead with three goals while senior Taylor Torres leads the team with 10 points (3 goals, 4 assists), including a pair of game-winning goals. Redshirt freshman Kelsey Brann has played all but one half in goal for UNT, sporting a .875 save percentage and a 0.52 goals against average. Last season, North Texas was the Huskies' first game post-Hurricane Harvey, coming after a two-week break between games. UNT won that match 5-0 in Denton.
On Sunday, HBU makes its first-ever visit to Austin to face Texas (4-0-1) with the game being broadcast on the Longhorn Network. The Longhorns, ranked No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, picked up a 5-0 win against fellow Southland Conference member Stephen F. Austin in their last match. Texas will host Texas State on Friday before taking on the Huskies. Junior Cyera Hintzen leads the Longhorns with five goals and 10 points while Nicole Curry, a junior, owns a 0.63 goals against average on the year. Like UNT, Texas holds a 13-3 advantage in goals scored over opponents.
The Huskies will open Southland play the following weekend at home with a Friday, Sep. 14, matchup with Abilene Christian at Sorrels Field at 7:00 p.m.
