NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – HBU Softball drops the series opener to Northwestern State, 5-2, Friday at Lady Demon Diamond.
Junior shortstop
Demi Janak went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while senior left fielder
Nicole Shedd hit a home run. Sophomore catcher
Heidi Jaquez walked and scored for the Huskies (8-30, 5-17 SLC).
Freshman
Jessica Patak (5-17) allowed five runs on three hits, five errors, three walks and two strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
Left fielder Kaitlyn St. Clair went 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two runs scored for the Lady Demons (25-20, 12-10 SLC). Center fielder Julie Rawls hit a three-run home run and walked, while second baseman Cayla Jones and third baseman Sidney Harris walked and scored.
Micaela Bouvier (13-8) earned the win, as she held the Huskies to just two runs on five hits, two errors, two walks and seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
Northwestern State started the scoring off in the bottom of the second, when St. Clair hit double to left and Codi Vernace reached on an error by Jaquez that scored St. Clair 1-0.
With two outs in the third,
Heidi Jaquez walked and second baseman
Amber Lotz singled to left. Jaquez was standing on third, when Janak hit a single up the middle scoring Jaquez 1-1.
In the sixth, back-to-back walks sent runners to first and second with one out for the Lady Demons. A Rawls homer to right cleared the bases making it a three-run ball game, but the Lady Demons kept the inning going with a St. Clair homer to left center. Relief pitcher
Elliott Estes entered the game and retired the next two, 5-1.
Nicole Shedd started off the seventh with a home run to left field, but the Huskies couldn't keep the rally going, 5-2.
The Huskies close out the series Saturday, April 28 with a double header starting at 12 p.m.
