SB: Huskies Split at Northwestern State

Jessica Patak records six strikeouts in win.

NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – HBU Softball falls 6-5 against Northwestern State in game one of the double header, but comes back in game two with a 6-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Lady Demon Diamond.

Game One, 6-5
Junior first baseman, senior third baseman Kassie James and sophomore Heidi Jaquez recorded multiple hit games for HBU (9-31, 6-18 SLC). Bushman went 3-for-4 with a home runs and three RBIs, while James went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Jaquez singled twice, walked and scored.

Elliott Estes (2-9) allowed six runs on nine hits, five errors, two walks and a strikeout in six innings.

The Lady Demons (26-21, 13-11 SLC) were led by shortstop Toni Hebert and first baseman Hayley Barbazon, who each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Barbazon doubled and scored twice, while Hebert drove in a run and scored. Designated hitter Codi Vernace homered and second baseman Cayla Jones singled, walked twice, drove in two and scored twice.

E.C. Delafield tossed the win, as she held the Huskies to just two runs on five hits, two errors and five strikeouts in four innings. Starting pitcher Mikayla Brown three 2.1 innings allowing three runs on three hits, two errors, five walks and three strikeouts.

Game Two, 6-1 
A couple of home runs drove in for a combined total of five RBIs. Senior left fielder Nicole Shedd went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBIs. Junior short stop Demi Janak walked and hit a solo home run with two runs scored. James singled, doubled, drove in one and scored twice.

Jessica Patak (6-17) earned the win in the circle holding the Lady Demons to just one run on four hits, an error, two walks and six strikeouts.

Vernace hit a double to push across the lone run for Northwestern State. Left fielder Kaitlyn St. Clair recorded a hit, along with Hebert and right fielder Kayla Roquemore.

Micaela Bouvier (13-9) allowed six runs on six hits, three walks and two strikeouts in five innings. Brown appeared in two and held the Huskies to no runs on one hit, no errors, a walk and two strikeouts.

The Huskies got on the board early in the first inning. With two outs, Janak hit a shot over the left center wall. One inning later, Bouvier sent designated hitter Ashley Herrara to first with a hit by pitch. Herrera then advanced to second on sacrifice bunt. Bouviers then sent Janak walking, before James singled and advanced to second on an error by Roquemore scoring Herrera and moving Janak to third. A Shedd home run over the left field fence cleared the bases giving HBU the early advantage, 5-0.

In the fourth inning, Patak struck out the lead-off batter, but walked center fielder Julie Rawls and St. Clair. Vernace doubled down the left field line to score Rawls and move St. Clair to third, 5-1.

HBU added a run in the fifth, when James and Shedd hit back-to-back doubles. Shedd scored James to seal the 6-1 victory.

The Huskies end their regular season at Sam Houston State with a three-game series starting with a double header Friday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
