SAN ANTONIO, Texas – HBU softball fell 6-4 in game one of the double header, but came back in the top of the seventh inning in game two with six runs to top Southland Conference foe Incarnate Word, 6-2 Friday afternoon at Cardinals Field.
Game One, 6-4
Senior third baseman
Kassie James went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run. Sophomore Amber Lots also went 2-for-3 and scored once for Huskies (6-19, 3-9 SLC) and freshman
Sierra Humphrey drove in one with a single.
Freshman
Elliott Estes (1-3) got the loss allowing three runs off two hits, one error, five walks and one strikeout in 3.2 innings. Senior
Stephanie Buenrostro made an appearance allowing two runs off one hit, two errors and one walk in two-thirds of an inning. Freshman
Jessica Patak came in relief for Buenrostro allowing, one run off one hit, one error and one strikeout in 1.2 innings.
Delaney Guzman went 2-for-2 with a homerun, walk, three RBIs and two runs scored. Victoria Bratcher hit a solo home run and Breanna Hernardez singled, walked and scored.
Breanna Hernandez got the win for the Cardinals (8-19, 4-8 SLC) holding the Huskies to just four runs off six hits, four errors, four strikeouts and three walks in seven innings.
Recap
UIW struck first in the bottom of the third, when Guzman led off with a walk and Hernandez singled to right. With no outs and runners on first and second, Breana Nevarez advanced both runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Marcela Lopez reached first on a throwing error by Estes and scored Guzman. Lopez then advanced to second on a throwing error by Jaquez that scored Hernandez, 2-0.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, senior
Nicole Shedd walked and scored thanks to back-to-back singles by junior
Brooke Bushman and Humphrey, 2-1.
The Huskies added three more in the fifth, after Lotz led off the inning with a single to left center and junior
Demi Janak walked. With two out, James hit a homer out to left giving the Huskies a two run lead, 4-2.
UIW didn't wait long to strike back as Bratcher led off the fifth with a home run out to right center. Buenrostro then walked the next batter, which led to a pitching change to starting pitcher Estes. Estes managed to get an out, but walked Monica Flores. Patak came in relief for Estes, when Guzman hit a three run home run to left center, 6-2.
Game Two, 6-2
Sophomore
Amber Lotz went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Janak hit a two-run home run, Humphrey hit a two-run double and scored and Shedd hit a double and scored.
Patak earned the win going the full seven innings holding the Cardinals to only two hits off six runs, two errors, four strikeouts and three walks.
Jordan Goins went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Emily Castro drove in one with a double. Guzman walked a scored, while Flores walked, singled and scored.
Sarah Leal got the loss allowing six runs off seven hits, six errors, five strikeouts and one walk.
Recap
The Cardinals took the lead early in the fourth, as Guzman led the inning off with a walk. Flores put down a bunt to single. Patak retired the next batter with a strikeout, but Castro doubled down the left field line sending Guzman across and Flores to third. Pinch hitter Jaylin Olivarez walked putting runners on the corners. Goins followed with a single to left scoring Flores, 2-0.
With their last chance to score, Bushman led off the seventh with a single down right field line and Shedd immediately followed with a double to left center.
Kay Schroeder hit a sacrifice fly out to right scoring Bushman. Lotz reached first with a hit to shortstop. With bases loaded and two outs, Humphrey drove in all three with a double up the middle. The bases were cleared, when Janak homered to center. The damage ended there, but UIW would never recover, 6-2.
