SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Home runs push Incarnate Word past HBU softball in the Southland Conference series opener Thursday night at Cardinals Field.
Senior
Kassie James singled to drive in the lone run for the Huskies (5-18, 2-8 SLC), while junior
Brooke Bushman went 2-for-2. Sophomore
Heidi Jaquez also singled and scored.
Freshman
Jessica Patak (3-11, 2-8 SLC) got the loss, allowing two runs off two hits, two errors, four strikeouts and no walks in 6.0 innings.
Both Angel Villanueva and Delaney Guzman went 1-for-2 with a homerun for the Cardinals (6-17, 3-7 SLC). Sarah Leal earned the win holding the Huskies to one run off five hits, four strikeouts and a walk in 7.0 innings.
The Huskies got on the board early, as Jaquez led off the first inning with a single and quickly moved to third on the error by right field. One batter later, Leal walked junior
Demi Janak. With runners on first and third with one out, James drove one out to right to score Jaquez, 1-0.
The Cardinals responded with a Villanueva homer out to center and again in the fifth, with a homer out to left by Guzman that decided the game, 2-1.
HBU faces UIW in a double header beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, March 29.
