LAKE CHARLES – HBU softball drops their season opener to non-conference foe Virginia, 3-1, Friday afternoon at Cowgirl Diamond.
Lacy Smith held the Huskies (0-1) to just two of its three total hits of the game, a double to right center by
Megan Hiers in the fourth that scored
Libby Brown, who walked earlier in the inning and
Brooke Bushman, who led off the fifth inning with a single up the middle, but was left stranded. The other recorded hit was a single by
Kay Schroeder in the seventh off of Erika Osherow in relief.
Down to the final three outs,
Kay Schroeder led off the inning with a single down the right field line, but the Huskies couldn't push any across, despite the bases being loaded.
The Cavaliers (1-2) initiated the scoring in the third inning with Madie Traver's lead-off shot over left field fence.
Stephanie Buenrostro retired the next three, which included a strikeout and two fly outs. With one out in the fourth and one runner on base, Ashlee Davis decided the game with a two-run homer. The Huskies pitching staff only allowed two other hits.
Stephanie Buenrostro started in the Circle for the Huskies, throwing four full innings. She allowed three runs off of two hits and three walks with one strikeout. In relief, freshman
Jessica Patak struck out two in two innings with two hits, no runs and no walks.
The Huskies face Tulsa at 12:30 p.m. and Southern at 3 p.m. tomorrow. They will conclude the Cowgirl Classic on Sunday against Tulsa at 10 a.m.
