HOUSTON - Former HBU standout men's basketball player E.C. Coleman returned to campus on February 15 to speak to HBU's current student-athletes for a special Black History Month presentation.
Coleman, who is still the all-time program record holder in rebounds and is second all-time in scoring, starred at HBU from 1969-73 before being drafted by the Houston Rockets and playing professionally in the NBA for Houston, New Orleans and Golden State. A prolific scorer in college, E.C. was known in the pros for his proficiency on defense, twice being named to the NBA all-defensive team.
Speaking to all of HBU's student-athletes, Coleman spoke of growing up in Flora, Miss. in the late 1950's and earl 1960's during a turbulent time in the south and becoming the first member of his family to graduate from high school and college. He discussed the values he learned growing up in Mississippi and during his time at HBU, then known as Houston Baptist College, and his time as an NBA player.
