HOUSTON – HBU Softball travels to Phoenix, Arizona to compete in the GCU Purple Classic hosted by Grand Canyon. The Huskies will play five games across three days, beginning Friday, Feb. 23. The Huskies (1-3) open the tournament with a pair of games, starting with the Niagara Purple Eagles (2-2) on Friday and 3:30 p.m., followed by an 8:30 p.m. game against the Grand Canyon Lopes (3-8). On Saturday, the HBU will start off by playing Grand Canyon at 3:30 p.m. and Niagara at 6 p.m. The Huskies and the Lopes close out the tournament Sunday at 12:30 p.m. All games are central standard time.
HBU Split its double-header against Texas Southern, taking the first game 3-2. Freshman
Jessica Patak went the distance on the mound. She pitched her first full game as a Husky, recording 2 runs on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Senior
Libby Brown improved her batting average to .357, after a 4-for-4 performance with a double and her first homerun of the season.
The Lopes dropped their last five games. As a team, they are batting .259 at the plate, while their pitch staff has a 4.76 ERA, allowing nine homeruns in 11 games. Shea and Sierra Smith lead the team with a .351 batting average and combine for 10 RBIs and 13 runs scored.
Niagara is led offensively by Rachel Funk, who is batting .500 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Kelsey Harriagan owns a .333 and leads the team with four runs scored and a homerun.
The Huskies host Prairie View A&M for a double-header Saturday, March 3 at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. They will then travel for a mid-week game against Texas State in San Marcos Wednesday, March 7 at 6 p.m.
