BSB: Baylor Clips HBU in Season Opener, 1-0

Junior RHP Zach Carter tosses six strong innings for Huskies

WACO, Texas – HBU junior righthander Zach Carter and Baylor lefthander Cody Bradford put on a pitcher's duel on opening night, but the Bears pushed across the lone run of the game in fourth and it held up to edge the Huskies, 1-0,  in the non-conference series opener Friday night at Baylor Ballpark.

Carter (0-1) allowed one run on four hits with a strikeout and three walks for HBU (0-1), while junior righthander Brady Batten pitched the final two innings, shutting out the Bears on two hits with  a strikeout and two walks.

Bradford (1-0) held the Huskies hitless for 6.2 innings, leaving after eight innings, allowing a lone hit, striking out eight and walking one. Troy Montemayor notched his first save of the season for the Bears (1-0), walking one in the ninth.

Junior rightfielder Matt Heck broke up Bradford's no-hit bid with two outs in the seventh. Senior leftfielder Spencer Halloran and junior Grant Buck were the Huskies' only other baserunners, both reaching via walks.

Richard Cunningham went 2-for-4 for Baylor, while Shea Langeliers and Cole Haring each doubled.

Langaliers led off the fourth with a double, Davis Wendzel walked and Haring was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. T.J. Raguse lifted a fly ball into foul territory near the leftfield line and Langeliers was able to score.

Buck led off the ninth for HBU with a pinch walk, then junior Anthony Jones replaced him on the basepaths. Senior second baseman Jack Fitzgerald moved Jones up to second on a sacrifice bunt, but Halloran popped out and senior shortstop Tyler Depreta-Johnson flied out to shallow center for the games' final out.

The series continues with a 3:05 p.m. start Saturday, followed by a 1:05 p.m. first pitch Sunday.
