HOUSTON – With the calendar switching over to 2018 the HBU men's basketball team will open the new year against Southland Conference foe Nicholls in the sandwich game of a three-game homestand on Saturday in Sharp Gym at 7:00 p.m. Fans can listen to the action with Lonnie King providing the call on the Legacy Sports Network audio broadcast, available at HBUHuskies.com.

HBU (4-11, 0-2 SLC), fell to New Orleans, 64-57, in its SLC home opener with sophomore Jalon Gates pouring in a game-high 20 and freshman Ian DuBose adding 17. Gates and DuBose are averaging 18.5 and 17.5 ppg in SLC play so far this season to lead the Huskies while freshman Philip McKenzie is averaging a team-best 8.5 rebounds per game against conference opponents. McKenzie has started the last two games with fellow freshman David Caraher out of the lineup, adding five points per game and totaling five steals over those two games.

Junior guard Braxton Bonds remains near the top of the league in steals, assists and assist-to-turnover ratio. His 2.2 steals per game are good for fourth while also ranking fourth with 4.8 assists per game and his A/T ratio of 2.2 is also fourth-best in the conference.

Nicholls (8-8, 2-1 SLC) boasts the top scoring offense in the conference at 86.9 points per game. That number has fallen, however, in SLC play as the Colonels are averaging 76 ppg in league play. The Colonels are led by a pair of graduate transfers in Roddy Peters and Tevon Saddler. Both guards, Peters is averaging a team-best 17.7 points to go with 5.5 rebounds while Saddler leads the team on the boards with 6.3 rpg and 16.2 ppg. Nicholls has won its two home conference games against Northwestern State and Incarnate Word while dropping its most recent game at Stephen F. Austin, 81-64.

The Huskies are 13-11 against the Colonels and have won the last two meetings, including an 83-80 victory in Sharp Gym last season.

HBU closes out its longest home stretch of the season on Wednesday, Jan. 10, when they host Abilene Christian in Sharp Gym at 7:00 p.m.
