CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Coming off the highest scoring output in a Southland Conference game in program history, the HBU men's basketball team looks to keep things rolling in a road matchup at the American Bank Center with the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's game will be available via ESPN3 with Lincoln Rose and Van Chancellor on the broadcast. The Huskies (5-16, 1-7 SLC) picked up a 102-86 win over Incarnate Word at home this past Wednesday, eclipsing the program's previous high of 99 in an SLC game. Five different players reached double-digits in scoring with sophomore
Jalon Gates leading the way with 23 points while junior
Braxton Bonds and freshman
David Caraher each had 22. Freshman
Oliver Lynch-Daniels added 13 off the bench while senior
Will Gates Jr. finished with 11.
HBU committed a season-low eight turnovers in the win while turning UIW's 14 turnovers into 20 points. The Huskies out-rebounded the Cardinals 43-38 with 19 of those boards coming on the offensive end. HBU continues to lead the nation in offensive rebounding, averaging 16.33 per game which is more than one-and-a-half higher than West Virginia, which ranks second in the nation at 14.60.
Caraher is averaging 20 points per game in SLC play, good for the third-best average in the league. Gates and freshman
Ian DuBose are both also amongst the league leaders in conference scoring with Gates 15
th at 14.3 ppg and DuBose tied for 21
st at 13.1 ppg. Additionally, in conference play, a trio of Husky freshmen have been among the most accurate shooters from three-point range with Lynch-Daniels ranking first with a three-point percentage of .611 (11-of-18), Caraher ranking fourth at .500 (16-of-32) and DuBose 10
th at .429 (15-of-35).
Senior guard Joseph Kilgore leads the Islanders (5-12, 2-5 SLC) in points (16.6 ppg), rebounds (5.8 rpg), assists (44) and steals (31). Freshman forward Sean Rhea is second on the team with 9.4 points per game and 5.1 rebounds but has stepped up his production since Southland play has begun, averaging 12 ppg and 6.9 rebounds against league opponents.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won its last game, a home win over Abilene Christian by a scored of 80-66. Freshman Tre Gray led the team with 20 points off the bench while Myles Smith added 15, Kilgore had 13 points and 14 rebounds and Rhea had 12 points.
HBU is 5-7 all-time against the Islanders with the teams splitting a pair of games last year in which the home team winning each game by double-figures.
The Huskies will remain on the road for their next game, traveling to Nacogdoches, Texas for a mid-week matchup with Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 7:00 p.m. inside Johnson Coliseum.
