HOUSTON – Five different players reached double-digits in scoring and HBU scored the most points in a Southland Conference game in program history in the Huskies' 102-86 win over Incarnate Word inside Sharp Gym on Wednesday evening.
David Caraher knocked down a pair of threes early to give HBU (5-16, 1-7 SLC) a 6-3 lead and a minute and a half later,
Jalon Gates buried his first three of the game to make it 9-5 in the Huskies' favor with 15:13 on the clock. Incarnate Word (5-13, 0-8 SLC) answered with a 12-3 run to take a five-point lead just over two minutes later.
UIW held its lead until Gates hit a three with 8:40 on the clock to even things up at 20-20. The Cardinals' Sam Burmeister made a pair of free throws to put UIW back ahead by two but an 11-point run by the Huskies, capped by an
Ian DuBose layup, gave HBU a lead it wouldn't relinquish. A
Will Gates Jr. trey put the Huskies ahead 42-30 with 2:05 left in the half but UIW closed the gap to six before an
Edward Hardt put-back dunk just before the buzzer sent HBU into the locker up 44-36 at the half.
The Cardinals came out in the second period and cut the HBU lead to three less than a minute in. At the 15:44 mark, another Gates three pushed HBU's lead back to 10. UIW brought the score to 71-64 with 8:43 to go in the game but the Huskies again had an answer with a Gates four-point play capping an 11-2 run and making it 82-66 with 7:25 on the clock.
