HAMMOND, Louisiana – HBU trailed Southeastern Louisiana by just one at the half but Joshua Filmore scored 19 in the second half to lead SLU past the Huskies by a score of 85-69 on Wednesday night at the University Center on Southeastern's campus.
Three consecutive early three-pointers gave the Huskies (4-15, 0-6 SLC) an 11-3 lead less than three minutes into the game but with 12:58 left in the half a Jabbar Singleton three from the corner capped an eight-point Southeastern (11-8, 5-1 SLC) run and put the Lions ahead 17-15. HBU's
Tim Myles responded with a pair of buckets in the paint to put the blue and orange back ahead, 19-17.
After a
Philip McKenzie jumper tied things at 21-21 the Lions went on an 11-3 run for their largest lead of the half, 32-24, with 4:14 left in the half. In less than two minutes, it was a McKenzie three from the wing that evened the score back up at 34-34 with 2:20 on the clock. Southeastern then took a 39-38 lead into the half.
In the second period, an
Edward Hardt three-point play put HBU ahead 43-40 but SLU then went on a 12-point run that included a pair of threes from Joshua Filmore to lead 52-43. The Huskies would get back to within six multiple times, including at the 7:46 mark after a
David Caraher three, but the Lions answered with a 10-0 run and led by double-digits the rest of the game.
Ian DuBose led HBU with 17 points and seven rebounds while
Braxton Bonds and
Jalon Gates each had 13 points. Bonds was 5-of-11 from the floor and added six rebounds to go with five assists. Gates knocked down 3-of-8 from three. Caraher was the fourth Husky to reach double-digits in scoring, finishing the night with 10 points and seven boards.
As a team, the Huskies shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from the floor while Southeastern hit at a 53.4 percent (31-of-58) clip. SLU won the rebounding battle, pulling down 38 boards to the Huskies' 32.
Filmore finished with 22 points with 19 coming in the second half, shooting 7-of-11 from behind the arc. It was Jordan Capps who led all players in scoring with a career-high 31 points, adding six rebounds and finishing 12-of-18 from the floor.
HBU will return home to Sharp Gym for its next two Southland matchups, beginning this Saturday, Jan. 20, when the Huskies host McNeese at 7:00 p.m. with that game being presented by Houston Federal Credit Union. HBU will then take on Incarnate Word at home on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 7:00 p.m.
