HOUSTON – Texas Southern lefthander Anthony Martinez went the distance as the Tigers handed HBU a 4-1 loss in non-conference baseball Wednesday afternoon at Husky Field.
Junior first baseman
Gianni Castillo went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while junior designated hitter
Matt Heck went 1-for-3 and scored for the Huskies (13-13).
Senior righthander
JT Jakubik (0-3) took the loss for HBU, allowing three runs on five hits with a strikeouts and a walk in 4.0 innings.
Horace LeBlanc III went 2-for-4, drove in a run and scored for the Tigers (10-20), while Ryan Jackson went 2-for-4 and scored. Jose Camacho had the only extra-base hit in the game with a double and scored.
Martinez (1-2) threw 106 pitches in holding HBU to one run on seven hits with a strikeout and a walk in 9.0 innings.
TSU broke a scoreless tie in the fourth as LeBlanc was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Camacho followed with a double. LeBlanc scored on a wild pitch, then Camacho scored on an RBI groundout by Sterling Motley. Blake Hicks and Andre Moore had back-to-back singles and Ricky Urbano walked to load the bases with two outs. Hicks then scored on a wild pitch to extend the Tigers' lead to 3-0.
HBU finally broke through in the seventh as Heck reached on an infield single and senior third baseman
Austin Zillweger followed with a single to left. The runners moved up on a wild pitch, then Castillo delivered an RBI single to right, but was retired in a rundown before the second run could score.
The Tigers added a run in the ninth on a two-out RBI single by LeBlanc.
The Huskies return to action when they host Central Arkansas in a three-game Southland Conference series Friday through Sunday at Husky Field. Friday's opener begins at 2 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. start on Saturday and a 2 p.m. first pitch in Sunday's finale.
