HOUSTON – Having closed out the road portion of its schedule, the HBU softball team welcomes Northwestern State to Husky Field this weekend for the second to last series of the season, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at 1:00 p.m and a single game slated for Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
The Huskies (15-22, 6-15 SLC) are coming off a series win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, winning two of three over the Islanders last weekend. HBU won a 12-innings thriller, 6-4, in the first game of the series with senior
Emily Mueller throwing a complete game and allowing just one earned run.
Stephanie Buenrostro then shut out the Islanders in game two, a 6-0 Husky win.
Junior
Libby Brown went 6-for-12 in the series with a double, one run scored and one run batted in. Over the last five games, Brown has seen her batting average rise from .213 to .259 with at least one hit in each, and three multi-hit games.
Kassie James was 4-for-11 last weekend and now leads the team with a .326 average and 20 RBI.
Mueller has now lowered her season ERA to 3.81 and her outing last weekend was her 10
th complete game of the season. As a team in the circle last weekend, the Huskies limited TAMUCC to just two extra-base hits.
Northwestern State (20-27-1, 10-11 SLC) has won its last three Southland Conference series, including taking two of three last weekend over Nicholls. The Lady Demons are led offensively by Kellye Kincannon who is pacing the team with a .292 batting average, 11 home runs and 39 RBI. Her 39 RBI are good for fourth in the conference while her home runs are tied for second. In the circle, Mikayla Brown carries a 13-11 record into the series with a 3.48 ERA.
With six games left in the season, HBU is currently four games out of the sixth and final spot in the Southland Conference tournament. Northwestern State and Central Arkansas are presently tied for the sixth seed with identical 10-11 SLC records while Southeastern Louisiana sits right behind them at 9-12.
Last season, the Huskies dropped two of their three games to the Lady Demons in Natchitoches, La. with Brown going 4-for-10 in the series with four RBI and two runs scored.
