BSB: Lamar Answers HBU Rally in Series Finale

Senior 3B Austin Zillweger drives in three runs for Huskies.



BEAUMONT, Texas – HBU rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead, but Lamar came back with five in the bottom half en route to a 10-4 victory over the Huskies in the Southland Conference series finale Saturday afternoon at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
 
Senior third baseman Austin Zillweger went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for HBU (13-12, 5-4 SLC), while senior centerfielder Zane Otten was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Junior shortstop Tyler Depreta-Johnson doubled and scored and has hit safely in five-straight games.
 
Sophomore righthander Zach Carter allowed two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings, while sophomore Daniel Endsley (0-2) took the loss, allowing five unearned runs on four hits in 3.2 innings.
 
Chad Fleischman went 1-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs for the Cardinals (16-13, 5-7), while Cutter McDowell went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Reid Russell was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run, Cutter McDowell wnet 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run and Cole Coker went 2-for-5.
 
Tanner Driskill (3-3) picked up the win in relief, holding the Huskies scorless over the final 3.2 innings. Lamar starter Jace Campbell gave up four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 5.1 innings.
 
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead, getting a sacrifice fly from Fleischman in the first and an RBI double by McDowell in the second.
 
HBU got on the board in the third on Otten's RBI single to left.
 
Lamar took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Russell.
 
In the sixth, senior righthfielder Brandon Brintz and junior leftfielder Spencer Halloran had back-to-back singles, then junior catcher Jake Pulcheon walked to load the bases. Zillweger delivered with a two-out, bases clearing double to put the Huskies on top, 4-3.
 
In the bottom half of the inning, another sacrifice fly by Russell tied the game, Robin Adames put the Cardinals back ahead with an RBI single, then Fleischman hit a three-run home run to right to cap a five-run frame.
 
The Huskies return to action and begin a nine-game homestand when they host Texas Southern Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Husky Field.
