HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State scored the first 10 points of the game and led wire-to-wire for a 78-63 victory over HBU in Southland Conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon at Johnson Coliseum.
Sophomore guard
Lisa Zderadicka led the Huskies (5-17, 3-9 SLC) with 19 points, a career-high 16 rebounds and four assists. Senior guard
Heidi Byrd added 14 points, while freshman guard
Sophie Taylor scored 12 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore center
Veronika Kirienko matched her career high with nine rebounds and blocked two shots.
Angels Delaney scored 19 points and pulled down five rebounds for the Bearkats (2-20, 2-10). Jennifer Oramas scored 14 points, while Tia Harston had 11 off the bench. Lydia Baxter led SHSU with eight rebounds and Ashleigh Cooper grabbed six.
SHSU shot 42.3 percent from the field, 7-for-12 from 3-point range, and 27-for-42 from the free throw line, while HBU sshot 31.0 percent, 6-for-28 from long distance, and 13-for-27 from the stripe. The Huskies outrebounded the Bearkats, 53-42, grabbing 22 offensive rebounds and holding a 27-8 advantage on second chance points.
The Huskies return home to face Lamar on "Play4Kay" Night Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Sharp Gym. The game will be presented by Houston Federal Credit Union.
