SAN ANTONIO, Texas – HBU and UTSA will meet on the hardwood for the first time since both were members of the Trans-America Athletic Conference when the Huskies make the trip to the UTSA Convocation Center on Saturday evening. HBU (3-6) is looking to earn its first road win of the season after dropping a heartbreaker to Saint Peter's in Jersey City, N.J. on Wednesday, 76-74. Senior
Josh Ibarra posted his second-consecutive 17 rebound game while adding 26 points and is now seventh in the nation with 11.3 rebounds per game which is more than three per game higher than anyone else in the Southland Conference. His 5.38 offensive boards per outing are second nationally.
Junior point guard
Braxton Bonds leads the team in assists with 44 and his 2.32 assist-to-turnover ratio is fourth-best in the SLC. Bonds also leads the team in steals, with 20.
Jalon Gates, a sophomore, is adding 9.7 points per game off the bench and leads the squad shooting from beyond the three-point arc, connecting on 40 percent (20-of-50).
The Huskies, as a team, are averaging 83.1 points per game and hold a plus-4.1 rebounding advantage. The team's 15.22 offensive rebounds per game is good for eighth in the country.
UTSA (5-5) comes into the game with a perfect 3-0 mark on its home floor. The Roadrunners defeated Texas State 79-78 along with SLC member Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by a score of 72-58. UTSA has lost its last two games, both on the road, at Utah Valley and Oklahoma.
Freshman Jhivvan Jackson leads the Roadrunners in scoring, averaging 17.6 points off the bench in 22.6 minutes per game. He scored a career-high 31 in the Roadrunners' loss at Oklahoma. Keaton Wallace, also a freshman, is adding 14.4 points on average while second on the team in both assists and steals. Sophomore Giovanni De Nicalao has a team-best 36 assists and 20 steals on the season while fellow sophomore Byron Frohnen leads the team with 6.9 rebounds per game.
Saturday will be the ninth meeting between the two programs with the Huskies holding a 5-3 all-time advantage. All eight previous meetings came in the 1980's with the majority of them coming when both teams were members of the TAAC. The last matchup was an 88-84 overtime win for HBU at UTSA on Mar. 4, 1989.
The Huskies will play their final non-conference home game on Friday, Dec. 15, when they host Barclay at 7:00 p.m. HBU will aim to win its 20
th-straight home non-conference game on Star Wars Night where fans will have a chance to win tickets to a 10:45 p.m. showing of The Last Jedi after the game.
