HOUSTON – The HBU men's basketball team will look to pick up its first Southland Conference win on Saturday evening when the Huskies take on defending SLC champion New Orleans in Sharp Gym at 7:00 p.m. Fans can listen to the action with Lonnie King providing the call on the Legacy Sports Network audio broadcast, available at HBUHuskies.com.
 
A short-handed Husky (4-10, 0-1 SLC) team fell in its SLC opener on Thursday evening at Lamar by a score of 68-86. Freshman Ian DuBose led HBU with 18 points while sophomore Jalon Gates added 17. Junior Braxton Bonds dished out eight assists in the loss while freshman Philip McKenzie pulled down eight rebounds.
 
The Huskies are averaging 78.4 points per game while the Privateers (4-8, 1-0 SLC) are scoring 70.2 on average. Bonds is currently in the top-three in the Southland Conference in assists (5.0 apg), steals (2.4 spg) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.3).
 
HBU is 4-8 all-time against New Orleans, falling in the lone matchup last season, 72-64, at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, La. The last time the two teams met in Sharp Gym, the Huskies pulled out a 74-73 victory.
 
New Orleans picked up a 77-74 home win over Abilene Christian on Thursday evening. The Privateers got strong performances from their interior players with Travin Thibodeaux scoring 20 and Makur Puou adding 16. UNO overcame an 0-of-6 performance from behind the arc and shot above 60 percent in the second half to earn the win. Thibodeaux is averaging a team-best 15.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for the year.
 
HBU remains at home for two more Southland games as part of a three-game homestand. The Huskies will host Nicholls on Saturday, Jan. 6, before welcoming Abilene Christian to Sharp on Wednesday, Jan. 10.
