HOUSTON – Justin Jones has been named assistant women's basketball coach at HBU, Huskies head coach
Donna Finnie announced Tuesday.
"The first time I met Justin, I was really impressed by the way he carried himself," Finnie said. "He has a wise head on his shoulders and a great temperament for working with young women. I was struck by how genuine he is and how he values the opportunity to be involved at the collegiate level. When replacing Becca (Allison) in this position, I wanted someone who could come in and hit the ground running, and Justin is very much prepared for what lies ahead of him."
Jones joins the HBU staff after spending last season as a student assistant coach with the LeTourneau University women's basketball team and helping guide the Yellowjackets to their first American Southwest Conference Tournament victory. He worked primarily with post players LaTanya Drakes and Ashley Stephens, who were both second-team all-ASC East Division selections, while Stephens was also tabbed ASC East Division Defensive Player of the Year. During the 2014-15 season, Jones was a student assistant with the LeTourneau men's basketball team.
"First and foremost, I want to say 'thank you' to Coach Donna for considering me for this position," Jones said. "I am so excited to be a part of this program. This is a great opportunity for me to continue doing what I love, and have so much passion for, at a great university."
A standout on the court himself, Jones ranks second all-time in LeTourneau history with a .576 field goal position and ranks seventh with 450 field goals made. His senior season, he scored the second-most field goals in Yellowjacket history with 303, tallied the third-highest point total with 672 and led the ASC in double-doubles (13) and rebounds (10.0 rpg). As a junior, Jones was named first-team all-ASC East Division and ranked fifth in the league with 7.6 rebounds per game.
A native of Waxahachie, Texas, Jones graduated from Waxahachie High School, then went on to play two seasons at Cedar Valley College, before transferring to LeTourneau. He will be pursuing a Master's degree at HBU.
"I am pleased we could bring Justin in and give him this opportunity to be part of our basketball family," Finnie said. "We are looking forward to him helping us with our young team as we grow."
