BSB: TAMU-CC Rallies Past HBU

Senior 1B Andrew Alvarez goes 4-for-5 with two RBIs, three runs for Huskies.

HOUSTON – Friday the 13th proved to be ominous for HBU, as the Huskies surrendered an 8-0 lead to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 10-run seventh inning and the Islanders went on to claim an 11-9 victory in the Southland Conference series opener Friday afternoon at Husky Field.
 
Senior first baseman Andrew Alvarez went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs, senior designated hitter Austin Saenz went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and scored twice. Junior rightfielder Joe Van Marter went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs, junior centerfielder Zane Otten went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and an RBI and senior second baseman Greg Espinosa was 2-for-4 with a run.
 
Senior Dylan Zarosky (2-4) took the loss for the Huskies (23-25, 11-14 SLC), allowing two unearned runs on three hits in two innings. Redshirt freshman righthander Zach Carter allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits in six-plus innings. Carter had shut the Islanders out on five hits through six innings, until the disastrous seventh.
 
Brett Burner went 4-for-5 with an RBI and scored twice, while Justin Perales went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and scored a run. Travis Geiser doubled and drove in two and Brandon Guilford went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.
 
Caleb Hanks (1-1) picked up the win for TAM-CC (17-31 6-19), allowing one run on one hit with three walks in 1.1 innings, while Garrett Harris earned his second save of the season by shutting out the Huskies over the final two.
 
HBU struck early with three first inning runs. Senior shortstop Louie Payetta led off with a walk, stole second then scored on a pair of wild pitches. Espinosa followed with a walk and scored on an RBI single by Alvarez, then Alvarez scored on an RBI groundout by junior third baseman Austin Zillweger.
 
The Huskies scored two more in the third as Alvarez led off with a single and Saenz followed with a double. Van Marter plated a run with a groundout, then Saenz scored on a passed ball to put the HBU ahead, 5-0. The Huskies added three more in the sixth on RBI singles by Alvarez, Saenz and Van Marter.
 
TAMU-CC head coach Scott Malone began emptying his bench in the seventh when the wheels came off for HBU. The Islanders sent 14 batters to the plate, scoring 10 runs on nine hits. The inning was highlighted by Geiser's two-run double, Austin Blakely's two-run single and Perales's two-run single put TAMU-CC ahead, 9-8. The Islanders tacked on another run as Burner scored on a wild pitch.
 
The Huskies scored on Otten's sacrifice fly in the eighth, but the Islanders got the run back in the ninth when Deaver drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a wild pitch.
