BSB: Southeastern La. Edges HBU in Opener, 3-2

Senior LF Brandon Morones goes 3-for-3 with a run for the Huskies.

HAMMOND, Louisiana – Southeastern Louisiana rallied for three unanswered runs to clip HBU, 3-2, in the Southland Conference series opener Friday night at Pat Kennelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Senior leftfielder Brandon Morones went 3-for-3 and scored a run, while junior rightfielder Brandon Brintz went 1-for-2 with two RBIs for the Huskies (19-21, 9-10 SLC). Senior shortstop Louie Payetta added a pair of hits.

Junior lefthander Christian Thames (2-5) took another tough-luck loss, allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 7.2 innings.

Sam Roberson drove in a pair of runs, while Drew Avans drove in the other for the Lions (29-13, 16-3). There were no extra base hits for either team in the game.

Gabe Von Rosenberg (2-0) picked up the win for SLU, holding HBU scoreless over the final two innings. Lions starter Kyle Cedotal gave up two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks in seven innings.

The Huskies loaded the bases with no outs in the third with a leadoff single by junior centerfielder Zane Otten and back-to-back bunt singles by Morones and Payetta. HBU only managed one run as Otten scored on a sacrifice fly by Brintz.

In the fifth, Morones singled and scored on an RBI single by Brintz to put the Huskies ahead, 2-0.

The Lions finally broke through in the eighth, as Roberson delivered a two-out, two-run single to tie the game.

Jameson Fisher led off with a walk in the eighth, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, then went to third on a groundout. Avans then hit a grounder up the middle that clipped Thames' glove and Avans beat out the throw by Payetta as Fisher crossed with what proved to be the game winner.

The series concludes with a doubleheader Saturday at noon at Alumni Field. The Legacy Sports Network broadcast with Russ Reneau begins with the pregame show at 11:45 a.m.
