HOUSTON – The HBU softball team split their Southland Conference doubleheader against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, falling 1-0 in eight innings and winning 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.
Senior designated player
Erica Reyes led the Huskies (15-23, 7-13 SLC) at the plate against the Islanders (14-27, 4-16 SLC), going 2-for-5 with one run scored. Freshman shortstop
Savana Guidry extended her current hitting streak to a season-best six game, with one single in each game.
Senior pitcher
Shannon O'Connor (5-7) picked up her third straight complete-game win, scattering nine hits and two runs (one earned), tying her season-high with five strikeouts. Fellow senior righty
Laci Belovsky (8-14) was the hard-luck loser in game one, surrendering one run on five hits in eight strong innings in the circle for her 17th complete game on the season.
Seniors Belovsky,
Caitlin Gunn, O'Connor,
Shay Orsak and Reyes, were honored in a special on-field ceremony after the conclusion of the doubleheader.
Tied 1-1, the Huskies will go for the series win in a 2 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
Game 2: HBU 5, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2
Junior right fielder
Cecilia Bauer led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo blast over the center field wall. With two outs, HBU tacked on three more runs on Islander starter Stephenie Flores (1-8) behind five consecutive hits. Reyes, Gunn, Guidry and Orsak all singled, before sophomore first baseman
Libby Brown belted a double to right field.
The Huskies added an unearned run to their lead in the bottom of the fourth to go up 5-0. Guidry singled in the infield and advanced to second on a throwing error during the play. After swiping third base, her team-leading 13th stolen base of the season, Guidry trotted home during a double play two pitches later.
TAMU-CC rallied in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs on two hits and one error for the 5-2 final.
Game 1: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 1, HBU 0
Strong pitching efforts from both Islander Liz Carter (8-11) and Belovsky kept the series opener scoreless through regulation.
In the top of the eighth inning, a walk and single put runners at the corners for the Islanders with one out. A comebacker to Belovsky allowed HBU to get the lead runner at the plate, but TAMU-CC plated the game-winning on a successfully executed double steal in the next at bat to claim the eventual 1-0 edge.
