HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The HBU softball team belted a school-record tying four home runs in a 16-6, six-inning run-rule of Sam Houston State to clinch the series, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Bearkat Softball Complex.
The four long-balls for the Huskies (14-22, 6-12 SLC) ties for the most since the program transitioned to NCAA Division I status. HBU also hit four homers in a 9-2 win against Houston-Victoria on April 2, 2011.
Freshman second baseman
Demi Janak knocked two dingers against the Bearkats (15-27, 7-11 SLC) in a 2-for-3 showing with four RBI and three runs scored. The multi-homer performance is the 24th in program history and the first since Kirsten Schwirtlich did so against Southern on Feb. 17, 2013.
Junior right fielder
Cecilia Bauer and sophomore left fielder
Nicole Shedd also both went deep, each collecting four RBI. Shedd did the most with her connection, hitting a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning.
Freshman shortstop Savanna Guidry and sophomore first baseman
Libby Brown each turned in three-hit performances. Guidry recorded eight consecutive hits to close out the series.
Senior
Laci Belovsky (8-12) turned in her 16th complete game of the season, working around 11 hits and six runs.
The Huskies jumped out front in the opening frame, courtesy Janak's three-run blast. After the Bearkats plated two in the bottom frame to cut it to a one-run game, HBU extended its lead with a six-run second inning behind RBI singles from Guidry (1) and Brown (2), and Bauer's three-run blast.
SHSU scored four runs across the third (1) and fourth (3) inning, but beyond-the-wall deposits from Janak and Shedd closed the game after six innings.
HBU will look to ride the momentum on Tuesday, closing their four-game road swing with a 3 p.m. first pitch at Prairie View A&M.
