SB: HBU Drops Two at Incarnate Word

The Huskies and Cardinals close their series in a noon first pitch Saturday.

SAN ANTONIO – The HBU softball team fell 7-3 and 5-2 to Incarnate Word in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Field.

The Huskies (10-18, 2-9 SLC), despite outhitting the Cardinals in both games, left 18 total runners on base.

Freshman second baseman Demi Janak led HBU at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a double and home run. Janak was one of three Huskies to record a two-bagger, joined by junior right fielder Cecilia Bauer, sophomore first baseman Libby Brown and senior third baseman Shay Orsak, who finished 4-for-8.

Senior righthander Laci Belovsky (6-10) suffered the loss in both games.

In game one, UIW quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first two innings.

HBU scratched one run across in the fifth inning, capitalizing on a failed pickoff attempt, before Janak's leadoff blast in the sixth made it a two-run game. However, the Cardinals tacked on three more runs in the bottom frame in cruising to the 7-3 final.

The Huskies struck first in the second game, plating one run in the opening frame on Brown's double.

After UIW evened the game, 1-1, on an RBI single in the bottom of the first, HBU retook the lead on a throwing error in its next at bat. Bauer led off the inning with a double to left field, before stealing third and trotting in on a miscue on the play.

The Huskies held the 2-1 advantage until the sixth inning, when the Cardinals put up four runs on five hits to clinch the series.

HBU will look to bounce back and avoid the series sweep in a noon first pitch Saturday.
