SAN ANTONIO – The HBU softball team fell 2-1, as Incarnate Word completed the Southland Conference series sweep on Saturday afternoon at Cardinals Field.
Freshman second baseman
Demi Janak was one of three Huskies (10-19, 2-10 SLC) to record a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 with a double. Sophomore center fielder
Libby Brown and junior right fielder
Cecilia Bauer also recorded two hits against the Cardinals (14-20, 5-7 SLC), respectively.
Senior righthander
Laci Belovsky (6-11) took the loss, scattering 10 hits and two runs in a complete-game effort.
After a scoreless first inning that saw each team strand a pair of runners, UIW took advantage of a walk, sacrifice bunt and single to score the first run of the game in the bottom of the second.
Belovsky kept the Cardinals at bay until HBU was able to even the game up in the top of the sixth. With one out, Brown (single) and Janak (double) both hit safely to put two runners in scoring position. Bauer plated Brown two batters later on a single in the infield.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, UIW pinch hitter Brigitte Gauvin drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single up the middle to claim the 2-1 edge.
The Huskies will look to get back on the winning track on Tuesday, facing Texas Southern in a 4 p.m. first pitch at Memorial Park in Houston.
