Dylan Zarosky had to work extra for it, but in the end, closed out the Huskies' 3-1 victory over Incarnate Word to set the school's all-time saves record in the Southland Conference baseball series opener Friday afternoon at Husky Field.
The Cypress, Texas, native notched his 16
th career save, passing J.D. Sellers, who pitched at HBU from 1995-97. Zarosky recorded his seventh save of the year, a career high, which is tied for the second-most in a single season at HBU, one behind the single-season mark.
Junior righthander
Addison Russ (4-2) picked up the win, allowing one run on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 7.1 innings.
Junior centerfielder
Zane Otten went 1-for-3, drove in the go-ahead run, and threw out a potential tying run at the plate. Junior catcher
Blake Thomas doubled, drove in a run and scored for the Huskies (13-13, 4-3 SLC).
Bernie Martinez (0-5) took the loss for UIW (6-20, 1-6), allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 6.2 innings, leaving the game after being struck on the leg with a shot back up the middle that ricocheted to the third baseman for a ground out. Trevor Hardee allowed an unearned run, a hit and a walk with a strikeout over the final 1.1 innings.
Brance Kahle went 3-for-4 with a double and Cory Duran went 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run for the Cardinals. Ryan Gonzalez drove in UIW's lone run and Braden Martin also added a double.
UIW broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth when Duran doubled with two outs and scored on Gonzalez's single to center.
HBU answered in the bottom of the inning as senior designated hitter
Austin Saenz was hit by a pitch, then scored Thomas's double to rightcenter. With two outs, Otten delivered an RBI single to left to put the Huskies ahead, 2-1.
The Cardinals stranded a runner on third in the sixth and seventh, then Eddy Gonzalez singled to lead off the eighth and went to second on a wild pitch. Zarosky came in for relief of Russ and was greeted by single to center by Kahle. Gonzalez tried to score on the play, but Otten threw him out to preserve the Huskies' one-run lead.

Brandon Morones led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and pinch runner
David Bloodworth later scored when Eddy Gonzalez dropped a fly ball in left that would have ended the inning, but instead extended HBU's lead to 3-1.
Martin doubled after a 10-pitch at-bat with one out in the ninth and Zarosky walked Duran and Ryan Gonzalez to load the bases with two outs, but Eddy Gonzalez lined out to shortstop
Louie Payetta, who was shaded up the middle, to end the game.
