SB: HBU Splits Doubleheader at Northwestern State

Huskies and Lady Demons will close series with a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday.

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The HBU softball team split their doubleheader at Northwestern State, winning 10-6, before falling 5-0 on Friday afternoon at Lady Demon Diamond.

The Huskies (10-11, 2-3 SLC) surged for a nine-run fifth inning to take the opener from the Lady Demons (17-9, 2-3 SLC), before being no-hit in game two.

Sophomore first baseman/center fielder Libby Brown proved the spark plug for the HBU offense, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI, one triple and one home run. The Houston native knocked a three-run blast as part of HBU's big fifth inning, her first homer of the season.

Huskies Savana Guidry, Demi Janak and Nicole Shedd joined Brown with two-hit games, while HBU collected 12 total hits as a team. Senior Catcher Caitlin Gunn, sophomore left fielder Nicole Shedd and Guidry all doubled.

Senior righty Shannon O'Connor (2-5) picked up the win in relief of starter Laci Belovsky. O'Connor surrendered just one run across four and one-third innings pitched with one walk and three strikeouts.

After two scoreless innings, NSU broke out for five runs on five hits, taking advantage of two errors, in the bottom of the third.

HBU scratched their first run across in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice bunt from senior third baseman Shay Orsak after Brown's triple, but the Demons added one run themselves in the bottom frame to hold a 6-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Huskies surged for nine runs on eight hits and cruised the rest of the way to take the 10-6 final.

NSU scored two runs in the second inning, adding one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and got a complete-game, no-hit effort from sophomore righty Micaela Bouvier (10-4) to even the series, 1-1, with a 5-0 victory.

HBU and the Lady Demons will close the series in a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday.
