Buy Photos HereHOUSTON – The HBU softball team split a pair of shutout decisions, defeating Lamar, 3-0, and falling 4-0 at Husky Field on Saturday afternoon to open Southland Conference play.
In the first game of the doubleheader, senior righthander
Laci Belovsky (6-4) tossed a complete-game shutout. The native of Conroe, Texas, scattered six hits, fanning two and walking four, in going the distance for the Huskies (9-9, 1-1 SLC). The shutout is the first for HBU since Belovsky blanked UTSA on April 22, 2015.
Senior third baseman
Shay Orsak led the team with a 2-for-3 performance with one double and RBI, while five other Huskies hit safely against the Cardinals (11-9, 1-1 SLC).
The Huskies struck first, plating one run in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman shortstop
Savana Guidry led off the frame with a walk and moved up into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, before Orsak drove her in with a single up the middle.
The 1-0 held until the sixth inning when HBU was able to tack on two more runs. After senior catcher
Caitlin Gunn and Belovsky both walked with one out, junior right fielder
Cecilia Bauer laced a double up the middle to plate one. The Huskies added one more run two batters later on a single down the left field line from freshman designated player
Brooke Bushman.
Belovsky retired the side in the top of the seventh to cap off her sixth complete game of the season.
Lamar responded with a complete-game shutout from junior righthander Ciara Luna (6-2) in game two to even the series, 1-1. HBU's sophomore outfielders
Libby Brown and
Nicole Shedd each turned in 2-for-3 performances in the loss.
The Huskies will look to take the series in a 2 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
