MBB: Huskies Drop Opener to Texas Tech

Senior transfer Atif Russell leads HBU with 16 Points

LUBBOCK, Texas – The HBU men's basketball team dropped its 2016-17 season opener, 93-67, to Texas Tech on Friday evening at the United Supermarkets Arena.

Senior Atif Russell led the Huskies (0-1) with 16 points on 6-12 shooting in his HBU debut. The transfer finished 1-4 from deep and knocked down 3-5 from charity stripe while also pulling down three rebounds.

Junior Josh Ibarra ended the night with nine points and tied for the team lead in rebounds with five while freshman Jalon Gates ended his collegiate debut with nine points off the bench on 2-4 shooting from beyond the arc and a perfect 3-3 at the line. Senior Colter Lasher led HBU with three assists to go along with eight points and five boards.

Texas Tech (1-0) junior guard Keenan Evans led all players with 28 points on 9-12 shooting, including a perfect 5-5 from three. Four other Red Raider players scored double-digits on the night.

The Huskies took their only lead of the game a little less than four minutes in to the game thanks to a Jalen Weber three. Texas Tech answered with a three of their own on the following possession and built its lead to eight less than four minutes later. A seven-point run by the Huskies brought the score to 19-18 but that was the closest HBU would get the rest of the way as Texas Tech steadily built its lead the rest of the way.

HBU continues its season-opening road trip against New Mexico on Monday in Albuquerque, N.M. at WisePies Arena with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
