HOUSTON – HBU has named Charlie Camp and Brandon North as assistant football coaches, Huskies head coach
Vic Shealy announced Wednesday.
Camp joins the Huskies as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He had been the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Rowlett High School in Rowlett, Texas, for the past two seasons. Camp has a wealth of collegiate experience, serving as linebackers coach at Akron, North Dakota State, Nevada, San Jose State, Oregon State, San Diego State and Idaho and defensive ends coach at Arizona. He also interned as a linebackers coach with the San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins.
A native of New Orleans, La., Camp was a four-year starter at linebacker for the University of Arizona's "Desert Swarm" defense from 1991-95. He led the team in tackles as a senior and received the Bear Down Award for Superior Effort and Achievement in 1992, 1994 and 1995. He played one season with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League, before receiving his bachelor's degree from Arizona in 1997.
"Charlie is a coach I got to know when I was at Air Force and he was at Idaho, seeing each other out on the road recruiting, and I've followed his career at some great universities, where he was very effective as a linebackers coach and as a recruiter," Shealy said. "I'm very grateful we were able to bring in a coach of Charlie's technical knowledge, leadership and ability build a culture of an tough, aggressive defense."
North will serve as HBU's secondary coach. He spent the last four seasons at Montana State, which included a pair of conference titles in 2011 and 2012. The Bobcats had the top-ranked defensive pass efficiency unit in the nation in 2011. North was awarded a Bill Walsh Minority Internship with the Tennessee Titans in 2013. He was also assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin from 2007-10, helping the Lumberjacks to back-to-back Southland Conference championships in 2009 and 2010.
A native of Missouri City, Texas, North was an All-Fort Bend County standout at Elkins High School. He went on to play collegiately at Stephen F. Austin from 1996-2000, helping lead the Lumberjacks to the 1999 Southland Conference title. North received his bachelor's degree in business administration from SFA in 2003 and a Master of education degree in 2009.
"Brandon was in town recruiting two-and-a-half years ago when we starting the program and stopped by out of curiosity and I left that meeting impressed with who he was as a person, his love for teaching the game and his enthusiasm," Shealy said. "He has such a dynamic personality, and with his success as a player at SFA and as a coach at top FCS programs, I know that it will be infectious with our student-athletes and he will make a quick impact in our program."
Camp replaces Brent Vieselmeyer, who is now assistant linebackers coach with the NFL's Oakland Raiders, and North replaces Aaron Fletcher, who departed to coach the defensive backs at the University of Tulsa.
Along with the two additions, Shealy announced some role changes on the offensive side of the staff as well. Shealy will coach the quarterbacks, associate head coach
Scott Smith will coach the tight ends and fullbacks and share offensive coordinator duties with
Drew O'Daniel, who will coach the offensive line.
The Huskies open Spring Practice next Friday, Feb. 27 at 4:30 p.m. at Husky Stadium.
