HOUSTON – HBU head women's basketball coach
Donna Finnie and her staff have concluded the early signing period with the announcing of Sydney Carr to a National Letter of Intent.

"We have been watching Sydney for a long time now, and after this summer, we knew she would be the right fit for what we needed in this class," said Finnie. "Syd is a very athletic guard who plays with great balance. She can finish with both hands and really sees the floor well. In addition to that she is a lockdown defender and will not shy away from the challenge of defending a prolific scorer. She comes from a very well coached high school program and is someone we feel will come in and do a lot of the things that we need right away.
"Syd is someone we see as having all the tools to be a difference maker for us. She is so versatile in her ability to defend and to score in multiple ways. She has the tools, and the basketball IQ, to be a key contributor for us."
Carr, a 5-8 guard from Crosby, Texas, was a four-year letterwinner and starter for head coach Michelle Trotter at Crosby High School. After earning Second Team All-District honors as a freshman, Carr continued on to have a stellar sophomore campaign which saw her named First Team All-District, Team MVP, and Academic MVP. As a junior, she repeated as First Team All-District and Team MVP in addition to being named to the All-State Team. Her biggest moment in her basketball career so far came when she hit two separate buzzer beaters during her sophomore season.
Carr has stood out as much in the classroom as she has on the court. She was honored for having the Top GPA of any girls basketball player in her district. Carr has thrice been named a Distinguished Scholar at Crosby High School. She earned the Principal's Pride Award as a freshman and went on to achieve the highest grade point average in Crosby's Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program as a sophomore.
"Syd is extremely conscientious in the classroom, and is someone who has very high ambitions for her career," said Finnie. "She is a determined young lady who has high aspirations both on and off the court. Getting the right fit academically was important to her and we are delighted she has chosen to continue her career here at HBU; close enough that her family can continue to watch her flourish."
The daughter of Brian and Angel Carr, Sydney plans to major in physics at HBU. She chose HBU because she feels that the school is the perfect place to further her education and basketball career.
