WBB: Huskies Sign Belle Tovar to NLI for ’16-17

San Antonio product played club for the Islanders

HOUSTON – HBU head women's basketball coach Donna Finnie and her staff are pleased to announce the signing of Belle Tovar to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Huskies in 2016-17.

"We have recruited Belle for some time now and were very excited when she chose to continue her education at HBU. Belle is all about family. She is very close to her parents and two younger brothers, and she was looking for a school that gave her that family environment, and she felt HBU did just that.

"Belle is an extremely skilled guard, who is capable of breaking people down off the dribble but also stepping in and hitting perimeter shots off the pass and off the screen. She has very deep range on her three and is someone who can really stretch the defense, which was a target in this class for us.

"We see Belle as someone who can come in and score for us. She is used to being the go-to scorer on the teams she has played for and, in our system, she will get opportunities to shoot the ball. She is a winner; she wants to beat out her opponent in whatever she does. We talk about Belle having swagger, and she is a confident player who we feel will adjust well to the college game."

Entering her senior year at Judson High School in Converse, Texas, Tovar, a 5-8 guard, is a three-year letterwinner for the Rockets and head coach Triva Corrales.

Tovar played AAU for the San Antonio Islanders and head coach Jesse Torres had great things to say: "Belle has taken full advantage of her opportunity and earned her place as an Islander. She didn't do it by telling people how good she is; she let her game do all the talking." Tovar's AAU successes started even earlier, with her middle school AAU team, the Lady Hoops, winning a national championship.

The daughter of Joe and Brenda, Belle plans to major in sports medicine at HBU. She chose HBU because, "It's such a pretty school. I love everything about it. It's such a family-friendly environment. There's a lot of stuff to do at this school. I've loved HBU since the first day I stepped on the campus. It was just the perfect school for me."

"In the recruiting process, it was evident that Belle's family would be a big part of her decision and we are delighted they have decided that they have become Husky fans," stated Finnie. "Belle is a very mature young lady who takes her academics and basketball seriously and will be a tremendous asset for us on the floor with the young team we will have. We are thrilled to have Belle join us and look forward to seeing her flourish here at HBU."
