Live StreamHOUSTON – The HBU volleyball team will open a three-match homestand on Tuesday, hosting Texas Southern at 7 p.m. inside Sharp Gym.
The Huskies (12-12, 5-5 SLC), sitting at .500 both overall and in Southland Conference play, will look to close their non-conference schedule with a winning record, before facing Sam Houston State and Lamar in league action on Thursday and Saturday.
On the season, junior outside hitter
Jessica Wooten is tied for 21st in the nation (third in the conference) with 36 service aces and tied for 38th overall (third in the conference) with an average of 0.41 aces per set. The native of Humble, Texas, also ranks seventh in the SLC with 3.18 kills per set and captains HBU on the back row with 2.74 digs per set. Last time out, Wooten recorded 11 kills as part of a double-double at Nicholls to move past Rachel Dinkins (977, 1999-01) for ninth all-time in career kills for the Huskies with 987.
Junior setter
Kayla Armer ranks third in the conference in assists, averaging 9.61 per set. Senior middle blocker
Allison Doerpinghaus ranks fifth in the conference with a .320 hitting percentage, while, defensively, her and sophomore middle blocker
Blair Gillard rank third and fifth in blocks, averaging 1.12 and 1.02 per set.
As a team, HBU is second in the Southland in blocks (2.28 per set), fourth in opponent hitting percentage (.194) and fifth in hitting percentage (.204).
TSU (9-16, 4-1 SWAC) enters the Tuesday tilt on a two-match winning streak. The Lady Tigers, who are currently tied atop the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings and lead the West Division, swept Texas College and Arkansas-Pine Bluff their last two times out.
Junior middle blocker Kali Fluke leads TSU with 2.77 kills per set, while setters Chelsea Thompson and Asia Howard steady the offense, averaging 4.48 and 3.99 assists per set. Junior defensive specialist Allison Woods anchors the back line with 3.25 digs per set.
Following Tuesday, the Huskies host SHSU (11-13, 5-5 SLC) at 7 p.m. on Thursday in their annual Dig Pink match to support Breast Cancer Awareness.
The Bearkats are led offensively by sophomore outside hitters Jordyn Vaughn (3.39 per set) and Brooke White (3.26 per set), ranking third and fifth in the conference in kills. Junior setter Michelle Griffith ranks second in the SLC in assists (10.32 per set), while junior libero Claire Kilpatrick is sixth with 4.04 digs per set.
SHSU sits third in the Southland in kills (12.63 per set), digs (15.89 per set), assists (11.76 per set) and opponent hitting percentage (.181).
HBU will close out the week with Lamar (13-10, 3-6 SLC) on Saturday. The Halloween match will take place at 11 a.m., prior to the home football game at 2 p.m. also against the Cardinals.
Lamar, in the midst of a three-match losing streak, is led by junior middle blocker Chelsea Grant on both sides of the net. Grant leads the conference with a .393 hitting percentage and ranks second in blocks, averaging 1.24 per set. Senior middle blocker Cortney Moore ranks fourth in the SLC in hitting percentage at .351, while Lauren Stahlam is fourth in digs with 4.30 per set.
The Cardinals rank second in the conference in hitting percentage (.236), third in blocks (2.19) and fifth in assists (11.51 per set).
After the homestand, the Huskies will play three out of the last four on the road, starting on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
