Women’s Soccer and Northwestern St. Battle to 1-1 Draw

Kristi O’Brien scores for Huskies; Patty Walrath makes seven saves

NATCHITOCHES, La. – HBU sophomore defender/midfielder Kristi O'Brien scored five minutes into the match, but Northwestern State scored a second-half tally, as the two teams battled to a 1-1 double-overtime stalemate Friday evening at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.

O'Brien, Charlotte Vancura, and Natalie Hager led HBU (2-5-2 overall, 1-0-1 SLC) with two shots apiece, while both of O'Brien's attempts hit the target. Rebekah Tovar assisted O'Brien's goal. Patty Walrath made seven saves in goal.

Northwestern State's (3-7-1 overall, 0-2-1 SLC) Yanci Johnson led all players with five shots and three shots on goal. Alex Latham made five saves in goal.

O'Brien gave HBU a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the contest. Tovar took an indirect free kick and passed it to O'Brien, who scored past Latham.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Huskies at the break. Northwestern State outshot the Huskies, 10-4, in the opening half, while corner kicks were even at two apiece. Walrath made four saves, while Latham made two.

Right at the 51st-minute mark, Northwestern State tied the match at 1-1, as Johnson had an individual effort. With her back to Walrath, she spun around and beat the keeper on the far corner.

The momentum seemed to shift in favor of the Lady Demons at that point, as they had a couple of shots on target, but Walrath stood tall in goal and kept the match tied.

HBU had a terrific opportunity to take the lead in the 74th minute, as O'Brien was on a semi-breakaway with the goalkeeper, but Latham made the save.

In the 81st minute, Walrath made a great challenge to stop a Lady Demon scoring chance. Seconds later, she smothered a Lady Demon corner kick opportunity.

The teams entered overtime with Northwestern State leading the Huskies in shots, 16-7, but HBU doubling up the Lady Demons in corners, 6-3.

HBU controlled most of the play in the extra periods, especially the second overtime, as HBU outshot the Lady Demons 3-1 in the second OT period and 3-2 in the two periods. The Huskies narrowly ended the match just 39 seconds into the second overtime period, but Alessia Dal Monte's header attempt went just wide.

Northwestern State outshot the Huskies in the match, 18-10, and had an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.

HBU returns home to face Lamar Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1 pm at Sorrels Field.
