PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Just four days ago, senior
Lauren Schwirtlich hit her first home run of the season. Schwirtlich hit homers number two and three Wednesday afternoon to help HBU sweep a doubleheader from Prairie View A&M, 11-1 in five innings and 7-0.
L. Schwirtlich went 5-for-8 with six RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader for HBU (13-20). Rachel Rodriguez went 2-for-5 for PVAMU (6-21).
The first three hitters of L. Schwirtlich,
Shay Orsak, and
Kirsten Schwirtlich, combined to go 7-for-11 with seven RBI and five runs scored in game one. L. Schwirtlich had a career-high four RBI, as she went 2-for-4 at the plate. K. Schwirtlich went 3-for-3.
Shannon O'Connor (3-6) earned the win in the circle, as she allowed five hits, one run, and one walk, as she tied her career high of six strikeouts.
Rachel Rodriguez went 2-for-2 for the Lady Panthers, while Alisa Navarro registered an RBI.
Brittanie Gardner (0-4) started in the circle and took the loss, as she gave up seven hits, six runs, and three walks in 3.2 innings. Samantha Arciba pitched 1.2 innings of middle relief and gave up five hits, five runs, and one walk. Olivia Lacewell pitched the final two-thirds of an inning.
HBU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single by
Daniella Rodarte. The Huskies exploded for five third-inning runs to lead 6-0, as the Huskies batted around. Orsak led off the inning with a homer, then Rodarte hit a two-run single. With the bases loaded, L. Schwirtlich hit an RBI single that brought home Rodarte.
Alyssa Burnett scored on a wild pitch to end the scoring for the inning.
PVAMU got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning, as Navarro's ground out scored Cally Falls.
HBU had another five-run inning, this time in the top of the fifth. L. Schwirtlich hit a three-run home run to put the run-rule in effect, 9-1. After Orsak doubled to left-center, K. Schwirtlich cleared the bases with a homer to center to give the Huskies an 11-1 lead. PVAMU went down in order in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
In game two, L. Schwirtlich went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Burnett had two hits and two RBI.
Kendall Stiefel (4-8) earned the complete-game win in the circle, as she allowed two hits and one run with seven strikeouts.
Brenicia Woods and Jazmin Hicks each had a hit for the Lady Panthers. PVAMU used four pitchers in the game, as Monica Cartwright (1-6) started and took the loss, as she allowed four hits, two runs, and one walk in 3.0 innings. The other three hurlers combined for six hits, five runs (three earned), and two walks with one strikeout.
Similar to game one, HBU took the lead in the top of the second, as Burnett's single to center scored
Michaela Granchelli and
Cecilia Bauer to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
All was quiet until the fifth, when HBU scored a pair of runs to lead 4-0. K. Schwirtlich hit an RBI single, then later scored, unearned, on a throwing error.
L. Schwirtlich hit her second homer of the day in the top of the sixth – a two-run blast that made the score 6-0.
Melissa Herman ended the scoring, as her ground out brought home Orsak from third.
HBU resumes Southland Conference play this weekend against Sam Houston State. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 pm, while Sunday's single game starts at 2 pm.
