Softball Splits Series-Opening DH at ACU

Shay Orsak goes 4-for-9 with four RBI and three runs in doubleheader



ABILENE, Texas – Sophomore Shay Orsak went 4-for-9 with four RBI and three runs as HBU split a Southland Conference doubleheader at Abilene Christian Saturday afternoon. ACU run-ruled the Huskies in game one, 18-8 in six innings, while HBU rebounded for an 8-6 game-two win.

Orsak went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and two RBI in game one, while Lauren Schwirtlich went 2-for-4. Victoria Granchelli had two walks and two RBI. Emily Mueller (7-10) started and took the loss in the circle, as she allowed two hits, three runs, and two walks as she faced four batters. Kendall Stiefel relieved Mueller and tossed the final 5.2 innings.

Lyndi Smith went 4-for-5 with five RBI and four runs scored to lead ACU. Anna Jones went 3-for-3 with six RBI and three runs. Hannah Null started the game and got a no-decision, as she allowed four hits, three runs, and three walks with one strikeout in 2.1 innings. Peyton Mosley (6-10) earned the win in relief, as she gave up five hits, five runs, and two walks in 2.2 innings. Emily Seidel pitched the final inning and struck out one batter.

The Wildcats used a seven-run second inning to break open a close 3-1 game. The Huskies scored twice in the top of the third, as V. Granchelli walked with the bases loaded and Cecilia Bauer's fielder's choice scored Kirsten Schwirtlich.

The Huskies scored five times in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run triple by Orsak.

Alyssa Burnett went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run in game two. Orsak went 1-for-5 with a pair of RBI and a run. Bauer and Daniella Rodarte each had two-hit games. Shannon O'Connor (6-6) earned the complete-game win, as she allowed 11 hits and six runs with four strikeouts.

 Madison Buckley went 3-for-4 with a run. Smith and Courtney Flanary each had two hits, as Smith had a team-best three RBI in the game. Seidel (2-7) took the loss in the circle, as she gave up four hits, five runs (three earned), and two walks with three strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Mosley pitched the final 5.2 innings.

HBU jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings, including a four-run second frame. Burnett got the Huskies on the board with an RBI double in the top of the first. Holly Webb's sacrifice bunt scored Bauer to start the scoring in the second inning. Orsak's two-run triple brought home L. Schwirtlich and Rodarte. Kirsten Schwirtlich concluded the scoring in the inning with an RBI ground out. In the top of the third, Rodarte's RBI double brought home V. Granchelli.

The Huskies increased their lead to 8-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, on a solo home run by K. Schwirtlich and a sacrifice fly by V. Granchelli.

HBU survived a comeback by ACU in the bottom of the seventh, as Smith hit a one out, three-run home run to bring the Wildcats to within two, 8-6. But the Huskies got a ground out and a pop up to end the game.

HBU (18-25 overall, 11-12 SLC) and ACU (19-26 overall, 8-8 SLC) conclude the series Sunday at 1 pm.
