HOUSTON – Freshman
Alyssa Burnett hit the only run in game one and followed that with a walk-off three-run blast in the bottom of the seventh in game two to complete HBU's comeback and sweep of Stephen F. Austin, 8-5, Saturday afternoon from Husky Field.
Burnett went 3-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored for HBU, who has won six-straight Southland Conference games.
It was a pitcher's duel in game one between HBU hurler
Emily Mueller and SFA ace Carlie Thomas. In the top of the fourth, Elizabeth Arana led off the inning with a single for the Ladyjacks. She stole second, then was caught stealing third for the second out of the inning. The very next batter, Shalie Day, flew out to dead center field, where
Lauren Schwirtlich hit the wall to make the catch.
The only scoring was Burnett's solo shot to right field in the bottom of the fifth, which came with one out in the inning.
The Ladyjacks had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, as Day led off the inning with a walk and stole second. SFA had the tying run in scoring position and only one out, but HBU got a fly out and a ground out to end the game.
L. Schwirtlich,
Shay Orsak,
Kirsten Schwirtlich, and Burnett each had a hit for the Huskies. Mueller (6-4) earned her first-collegiate shutout, as she allowed just four hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
Alisa Hamilton had three of the four hits for SFA, as Arana had the other. Thomas (9-8) took the loss as she allowed four hits, one run, and one walk with six strikeouts.
SFA wasted little time getting a lead in game two, as Taylor LeFlore hit a one-out homer to right field in the top of the first. The Ladyjacks took a 2-0 lead with an RBI single by Hamilton in the top of the second.
HBU cut the deficit in half in the bottom half of the inning, as
Cecilia Bauer hit a one-out solo homer to left to make the score 2-1.
In the top of the third, SFA was threatening with runners at the corners and one out. Starter
Shannon O'Connor was pulled for
Kendall Stiefel. Katelyn Standley hit a two-run double to increase the SFA lead to 4-1. The Huskies got out of the inning with a foul out and a line out.
Once again, HBU chipped away at the deficit with a single run in the bottom half of the inning, as
Melissa Herman's RBI single brought home Orsak to make the score 4-2.
After an RBI single by Standley in the top of the fifth gave the Ladyjacks a 5-2 lead, the Huskies made their comeback with two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Daniella Rodarte led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, then advanced to third on a double by
Holly Webb. Thomas relieved starter Brittany Lewis for a potential save situation. The first batter she faced, L. Schwirtlich, doubled down the left-field line to bring home both Rodarte and Webb to cut the deficit by one, 5-4. Thomas regrouped and struck out the next two batters to keep the Ladyjacks' lead.
SFA went down in order in the top of the seventh. Herman led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right. Two batters later, Bauer hit a one-out single that advanced Herman to third. Rodarte smacked an RBI single down the left-field line that scored Herman and tied the game at 5-5. Burnett cleared the bases with a homer to right field to complete the comeback and give the Huskies an 8-5 walk-off win.
Seven different Huskies had two-hit games, as HBU outhit SFA, 15-7. Burnett had three RBI, while both Bauer and Rodarte had two runs scored.
O'Connor started in the circle and got the no-decision, as she allowed four hits, four runs, and three walks with one strikeout in 2.1 innings. Stiefel (3-7) earned the win in relief as she gave up three hits and one run with one strikeout.
Standley went 2-for-3 with three RBI for SFA, while Arana had two runs scored.
Lewis also started in the circle and got the no-decision, as she gave up 10 hits and four runs with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Thomas (9-9) suffered her second loss of the day as she allowed five hits and four runs with three strikeouts.
HBU (11-16 overall, 7-4 SLC) and SFA (14-17 overall, 5-5 SLC) will conclude the series Sunday at 2 pm.
