HOUSTON – SFA's Katelyn Standby hit an RBI single down the left-field line in the top of the fifth as SFA took the series finale from HBU softball, 1-0, Sunday afternoon from Husky Field.
It was another terrific pitcher's duel between HBU's
Emily Mueller and SFA's Carlie Thomas, as the two combined for four strikeouts, seven hits, and one run.
HBU threatened in the bottom of the third, with runners at first and second with two out, but
Holly Webb hit a deep fly ball to center field to end the inning.
SFA had a chance to break the scoreless tie in the top of the third with a runner at third with two outs, but Mueller got a groundout to end the threat.
Mueller had retired six-straight batters before Heather Hollingsworth led off the top of the fifth with a single. HBU was able to get out of the inning unscathed with a fly out, a line out, and a ground out.
The Ladyjacks broke through in the top of the sixth, as Elizabeth Arana hit a one-out single. After stealing second, she scored on Standby's RBI single.
HBU threatened in the bottom half of the inning, as
Kirsten Schwirtlich and
Melissa Herman led off the inning being hit by a pitch and a walk, respectively, which placed runners at first and second and nobody out. But Thomas hunkered down and got two strikeouts and a fly out to end the inning.
Pinch-hitter
Victoria Granchelli drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, then to third on a wild pitch. The tying run was 60 feet away with two outs, but Thomas got a strikeout to end the game.
Lauren Schwirtlich and K. Schwirtlich each had a hit for HBU (11-17 overall, 7-5 SLC). Mueller (6-5) suffered the loss in the circle, as she allowed five hits, one run, and two walks with one strikeout.
Taylor Vick went 2-for-3 for SFA (15-17 overall, 6-5 SLC). Thomas (10-9) went the distance in the circle, as she allowed two hits and five walks with three strikeouts.
HBU hits the road next weekend for a three-game series at Lamar.
