Huskies defeat Southeastern Louisiana, 7-1 and 10-0 in five innings

HOUSTON – Behind two strong pitching performances by Emily Mueller and Shannon O'Connor, HBU's bats came alive in a doubleheader sweep over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday afternoon by scores of 7-1 and 10-0 in five innings.

Shay Orsak had a five-hit day, four of them coming in the second game. Lauren Schwirtlich, Kirsten Schwirtlich, and Victoria Granchelli each had four-hit days, with two hits in each game.

Southeastern Louisiana drew first blood in game one, as Laci Fritz hit a homer to left to lead off the top of the second.

HBU took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, as L. Schwirtlich hit a two-out triple to left-center and scored on an RBI double by Orsak. K. Schwirtlich's triple to left-center brought home Orsak for the go-ahead run.

The Huskies plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Alyssa Burnett hit a two-run single and L. Schwirtlich had an RBI double to give the Huskies a 5-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Daniella Rodarte hit an RBI single to right-center that brought home V. Granchelli. One batter later, Holly Webb's RBI single to right field brought home Cecilia Bauer to give the Huskies a 7-1 lead.

The Lady Lions went down in order the final two innings to end the game.

L. Schwirtlich, K. Schwirtlich, and V. Granchelli each had two-hit games for HBU. Burnett had two RBI for the Huskies, while V. Granchelli and Bauer each had two runs scored.

Mueller (5-3) went the distance in the circle and allowed four hits, one run, and three walks with two strikeouts.

Fritz was the lone Lady Lion to have more than one hit, as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Katie Lacour and Brittany Tschoepe each had one hit.

Taylor Bishop (3-5) started and took the loss for SELA, as she allowed five hits and three runs with one strikeout in 3.0 innings. Spencer Adkinson pitched the final 3.0 innings and gave up six hits, four runs, and two walks with two strikeouts.

HBU exploded for 10 runs and 12 hits in a 10-0 five-inning win in game two.

V. Granchelli scored the first run of the game for the Huskies, as she led off the bottom of the second with a homer to left-center. She later helped on the second run, as she grounded out to third, but allowed Orsak to score from third in the bottom of the third.

The Huskies broke the game open with a four-run bottom of the fourth. Orsak hit a two-run single, K. Schwirtlich hit a sac bunt that allowed L. Schwirtlich to score from third, and V. Granchelli hit a two-run double, as HBU led SELA, 6-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, K. Schwirtlich's RBI single made the score 7-0. One batter later, Melissa Herman hit a three-run blast to left field to end the game in walk-off fashion.

Orsak went 4-for-4 at the plate for the Huskies, the second time in her career she has had a four-hit game. She also had two RBI and three runs scored. L. Schwirtlich, K. Schwirtlich, and V. Granchelli each had two hits.

O'Connor (2-5) pitched a gem in the circle, as she allowed just one hit. She did not walk a batter and struck out three. The lone hit came in the top of the first and she proceeded to get the next 14 Lady Lions out in order.

Vanessa Eng had the only hit for SELA. Tori Stamper (4-2) went the distance in the circle, as she allowed 12 hits, 10 runs (nine earned), and five walks in 4.2 innings.

HBU (8-14 overall, 4-4 SLC) and Southeastern Louisiana (8-10 overall, 3-5 SLC) conclude the series Sunday at 2 pm.
