Signing Day Press Conference Video
HOUSTON – HBU head football coach
Vic Shealy announced the signing of 22 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent at a press conference on campus Wednesday.
"Our recruiting effort started in the greater Houston area, then branched throughout the state of Texas," Shealy said. "We are extremely excited about our 2014 recruiting class. I feel that many players in this group of very talented athletes will step in and make an immediate impact here at HBU and in the Southland Conference. While the class' athletic ability is tremendous, the quality of the man, family and academic student is just as impressive."
The Huskies have signed 12 defensive players – five defensive backs, five defensive linemen and two linebackers. With 10 members of the class on the offensive side, HBU added four offensive linemen, two running backs, two wide receivers, a quarterback and a tight end. Three of the Huskies' signees were members of Texas state championship teams.
Eight members of the class are from the Houston area, including defensive back
Taaron Timmons, the program's first
Houston Chronicle Top 100 Recruit. HBU has 18 signees from the state of Texas, two from Oklahoma, one from Tennessee and one from Mississippi. Three of the signees are junior college transfers -- defensive end
Josh Jones and defensive back
Mike Cole are both Oklahoma natives and were teammates at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, while
Greg Hadley is from Mississippi and is transferring from Itawamba Community College.
"The 2014 class gives us a great blend of highly-skilled athletes along with a group of linemen that possess the power and strength to compete quickly," Shealy said. "As a staff, we came away from the fall with confidence in our 2013 class and the foundation that was laid. The 2014 class builds on that foundation, and we have addressed areas athletically that will give us a more comprehensive roster."
On the program's first National Signing Day last year, HBU signed 22 student-athletes, 15 of which were starters during the Huskies' inaugural, developmental season in 2013. The Huskies went 3-4 in the fall and faced future league rivals Sam Houston State, Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word.
"We look forward to many great years and memories to come as we welcome the 2014 class to the HBU family," Shealy said. "We are anxious to get these athletes on campus this summer and begin the process of winning a championship, while developing champions."
HBU is scheduled to open the 2014 season, the Huskies' first official season as an NCAA Division I FCS and Southland Conference competitor, at home against McMurry Sept. 6 at its new on-campus stadium.
