Fast Start Propels Islanders Past Women’s Basketball

Steenholdt and Jefferson lead Huskies with 13 points apiece



HOUSTON – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi outscored HBU, 13-2, in the first four minutes, shooting 71 percent from the floor and 60 percent from beyond the arc in the process, en route to a 74-62 victory over the Huskies Saturday afternoon from Sharp Gym.

Shanice Steenholdt and Tayler Jefferson each led HBU (11-15 overall, 7-8 SLC) with 13 points apiece, while Rachel Arthur chipped in with 10. Ekemini Essien came off the bench to score a career-high eight points. Steenholdt and Anna Strickland each pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

TAMUCC (15-11 overall, 8-7 SLC), winners of five straight, was led by Shola Adebayo with 26 points, while Alissa Campanero and Brittany Mbamalu scored 14 and 11, respectively. Ashley Darley pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. The Huskies held TAMUCC's leading scorer, Jasmine Shaw, scoreless.

After spotting HBU a quick 2-0 lead, the Islanders scored 13-straight points, and 16 of the game's 20, to lead HBU, 16-4, with 15:18 to go in the first half. The Islanders were 4-for-6 from beyond the arc in that stretch.

HBU used a 9-3 run to cut the deficit to six, 19-13, following a three-pointer by Jefferson, but the Islanders went on a 10-1 run to push their lead back up to 15, 29-14, with 6:47 remaining.

Down 16 with 2:38 to go in the first half, Heidi Sihvola's three-pointer, followed by two free throws by Steenholdt, cut the deficit to 11 with 16 seconds remaining. But Adebayo hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Islanders a 13-point halftime lead, 38-25.

Steenholdt led HBU with seven points in the first half, while Adebayo had 12 for TAMUCC. The Huskies shot just 31 percent from the floor, and 31 percent from the 3-point line, compared to the Islanders' 52 percent from the floor and 60 percent from beyond the arc.

TAMUCC pushed the lead by as many as 18 early in the second half before HBU used a 16-7 run to trim the Islanders' lead to nine, 50-41, with just under 12 minutes to play in regulation. Essien and Jefferson combined for 11 of the 16 points in the run.

Following an Islanders timeout, TAMUCC responded to go on a 14-4 run to go back up by 19, 64-45, with 7:18 remaining. The closest the Huskies could come the rest of the way was 11 following a three-pointer by Arthur with 33 seconds to go.

The Huskies and Islanders meet again next Saturday, March 1 in Corpus Christi. Tip-off is scheduled for a 12 pm start.
